Do you have an uncomfortable or uneven bite?
A temporomandibular disorder can lead to a range of problems that affect the comfort and function of the bite, often accompanied by other symptoms such as headaches, jaw pain, and discomfort in the neck and shoulders. An experienced and highly trained orthodontist in Chevy Chase, Dr. Linda Hallman has been helping patients with bite problems and TMJ disorders to achieve a healthier, more comfortable and stable bite through comprehensive orthodontic treatment.
What is TMJ?
“TMJ” refers to the temporomandibular joint that connects the skull to the lower jaw and facilitates the movement required for eating and speaking. The joint itself is surrounded by some of the body’s strongest muscles that move the lower jaw when you speak and chew. These muscles can become tense and strained when the TMJ is not allowed to function properly and rest in a natural, relaxed position. Muscle tension leads to the common symptoms and discomfort often associated with a temporomandibular disorder, or “TMJ”.
Dr. Hallman works with both adults and children to address TMJ and other problems related to the function of the bite, helping patients to establish a stable bite that allows the jaw joints to function naturally and without tension and discomfort.
Common causes of a bite disorder can include:
- Malocclusion: this can include underbite, overbite and crossbite
- Crooked teeth, crowding of teeth
- Trauma
- Jaw structure abnormalities
Orthodontics for TMJ
Dr. Hallman provides comprehensive orthodontic treatment options to address TMJ and bite problems. From traditional metal braces and appliances to short term ortho using clear aligners, we work with you on an individual basis to evaluate your needs and achieve your cosmetic goals with effective orthodontic treatment.
The goal of treatment is to realign the teeth and balance the bite so that the teeth make proper contact when biting and speaking, reducing any possible muscle strain in the jaw joints. A balanced and naturally functioning bite will be comfortable, beautiful and support your long term dental health.
The type of braces and length of your treatment will depend upon the severity of your dental problems and your cosmetic goals. Dr. Hallman will provide a personalized treatment plan after an exam and digital diagnostics for your consideration.
